Transit wax

Hi all,ive been advised by tile shop guy to remove transit wax on porcelain tile with a product "wax off" Im not sure of the make.Anyway , when the wax is removed shouldnt I have to seal the tile as he didnt mention nothing about sealing !!! The tiles are from China

It is made by Lithofin..


And yes they should be sealed to close the pores created by the polishing process.

You need a sealer suitable for polished porcelain.

Transit wax is often found on polished porcelain, however, there are many through bodied matt porcelain tiles that require sealing too.

All porcelain needs to be tested to see if it needs sealing

How do you know if it needs sealing Kev ?

Conduct a straight forward water test to check the porosity. It is always better to be safe than sorry with porcelain these days.

So if there is any water absorbtion at all it needs sealing then ? If it is v pourous it could need a few seals then could it Kev ?

Fully vitrified Porcelain tiles have 0.05% water absorption rate , so water testing on fully vitrified tiles is pointless .
Polished porcelain needs sealing to aid cleaning as the sealer helps close the microscopic pores created whilst factory polishing.

Now you can also have dust pressed porcelain unglazed and these will show water wetting.

The point of the water test is to check. How do you know they are fully vitrified?

Because the OP is transit wax on polished porcs and polished porcs are fully vitrified..


But dust pressed porcs are through bodied/same colour back and front and mat in finish, hence they wet up..

So all polished porcelain is assumed to be fully vitrified regardless of where it was produced?
