Hi guys - *newbie alert* possibly daft questions ahead...

I've got a wetroom I'm planning to tile (floor and walls) with Trav (60cmx40cm - 12mm thick) - given the weight of these suckers I'm thinking about the right subsrate.

Walls are (currently) a mix of :

New 'bare' thermolite blocks
New 'bare' green mositure resisitance plasterboard screwed every 15-20 cms to stud work
New 'bare' green mositure resistance plasterboard, 'dot and dabbed' to grey plasterdboard, dot and dabbed to rough brick work
(to bring the wall out a little)

From what i've read here so i think i should not get any of the walls
which will take the tiles plastered - correct?

It's going to be a wetroom so will be sticking Durabase WP to the walls
prior to tiling ?

Can you guys please give me some advice on how each of these walls
should be treated/prep'ed so i can tile 'em with the Trav tiles?

Thanks in advance!!!:bigear:

Pic's right...that would help all right...whilst i read the 'how to upload pic's faq' perhaps I should add ...each wall is entirely built from one of the subsrate mentioned - think 3 sides of a rectangle.

One wall is entirely bare blocks, the other wall MRP dot and dabbed and
the other MRP screwed...hope that's helps will work on the pics though...

Cheers.

The plan is to tile the whole of the block wall (8sqm out of shot), so would need to do it all to avoid a variation in thickenss - i guess?

Is it not good practice to tile directly on the blocks then?

What's everyone’s view on the MRP walls ?

MRP on stud - is that ok to tile directly to as it's 'mechanically fixed'
(screwed 35mm pb screws every 10-15 cm) ?

MRP ‘dot and dabbed’ to grey pb ‘dot and dabbed’ to the rough brickwork?
Will that be sufficient secure to tile directly onto?
Should i look to mechanically fix those boards aswell to the brickwork?

Did some digging on the forum yesterday - weight of Trav Vs Max permitted weight per substrate (below) -

Weight per sq metre (Kg) for 6mm thick bed solid bed adhesive application
10mm thick natural stone
35.30 Kg/m2
12mm thick natural stone
40.68 Kg/m2

Maximum permitted weights per m2 of tiles and adhesive combined
Plaster 20kg/m2
Plasterboard 32kg/m2
Render 40kg/m2
Marmox Tile Backer Board 62kg/m2

So… it reads like i need to rip out the MRP both walls and fix 'backer board' and possibly render the blockwork wall? Or based on your practical
experience is that ideal but possibly OTT? Or is the ‘as is’ substrate sufficient? (I'm hoping for reassurance or a quick fix - BUT want to do it once - right!)

Will the durabase WP that I'm planning to put on the walls by the shower
area make any difference to the substrate ?

In expectation of your pearls of wisdom…

For peace of mind and to do it right you need aqua panels around the shower area, fit them with as small an area cut out for shower fittings etc, I would cut holes for pipes, once the pipes are through then Silicon all joints and holes to prevent leaks. Tank all the seams with liquid tanking. The blocks need to be either stud walls or dot and dabbed with moisture check pb. Rendering is a slower option, the plasterboard will take the weight of the tiles on its own, tiles onto bare block is a no no. Don't forget to reinforce the area that the shower will be hung with extra timber. If a glass screen is being fitted then I would have extra timber along its fixing lines.

You need to weigh a mtr of tiles and then add approx 3.5 kg a mtr for adhesive and grout...then come back with what you have..

Diamond...

I've got from 'Wetdecs' the Durabase WP tanking for the walls (and floors)

Block's - 'no no' got it!

Shower is 'ceiling' mounted and recessed so isn't surface mounted - one less thing to worry about :hurray:

No Glass screen planned

Dave - thanks have asked the tiles supplier for the weight - guess their on a go slow - can't think why - will come back once i know for sure
cheers for advice guys...
