Travertine on backer board

I am about to lay a small number of honed and filled travertine tile 400x400 on small bathroom floor 700x1450.This on backer board on top of flooring grade mdf. I intend to use Ardex S 16 fastset and a suitable grout and finish with a few coats of HD impregnator. There is a need to get the WC working again asap. The questions are: is this ok?, Should I fill any holes in the back of the tile with adhesive? What colour grout and what brand, was thinking Mapie Beige?? And is HD impregnator any good as the others seem murderously expensive. Thanks

would fill in the large gaps on the tiles,use a white flexible adhesive(either adsilex p9 or keraflex,preferably the latter)and grout would probably be jasmine by mapei,use a sealer that is also a colour enhancer usually lithofin stainstop plus colour intensifier

So does tile on to backer board (Cembrit) require a flexible adhesive? The only problem I have is the hardening time causing the bathroom to be U/S for a long time.

I have some questions first before going any further...

Flooring grade mdf...how thick is this and what is it laid onto..?

Who advised the ardex S16...? it's not suitable for timber floors.

Do you mean HG impregnator....?

And what backer board is it.?

18mm laid on to joists with 28cm centres and then Cembrit Blunn Special Performance board

I meant HD stone impregnator, Its Dutch I think.

I had assumed that the backer board would remove the need for flexible adhesive which would be needed for ply for example.

The subfloor is still subject to thermal expansion and small amounts of deflection, so i would advise a flexible adhesive....Ardex 7001 being one from theie range...

That isn't a backerboard or sealer that i have heard of....where are you based..?

I see what you mean re movement. The walls of the room were also covered in cembrit 8 years ago and tiled with porcelain tile using ardex x7w - no problems yet.Based in North London

I can recommend Cembrit, very smooth surface and comes in very large sheets

I removed your links with you being a new member and we don't normally allow links etc till you have posted a bit more..but i did look and the board seems fine as long as the main floor is solid.

You can get LTP at good prices...i personally don't like HG, they tend to leave a sticky film and is hard to buff off...

LTP mattstone is great fors tone and leaves natural matt finish or LTP colour intensifier and stainblock will darken the stone slightly and enrich the colour..

The sealers can be bought from Tile giant.

Just buy a standard setting flexi adhesive...

Keraflex maxi has a bucket life once mixed of around 8 hrs, so plenty working time.

One final question: what size trowel is recommended? I have 10mm square but reading stuff on here it looks like many rather like round section. Would 10mmx20mm half round be overkill

Second the LTP, does what it says on the tin and not bad value either. Bondit do some sealers also, i've only used it once on a job where the customer had ceramic floor tiles on the wall with a trav boarder. Worked nicely but they were only 35mm ish square off a sheet

Just got around to fitting the tile - bought Keraflex BUT looking at the data it claims not for use with beds of more than 5 mm - am using a 20x10 trowel for a 100% cover now would you use Keraflex or do i have to go an get Keraflex Maxi?
