Travertine onto a chipboard floor?

Hi fellas, i know i cant tile straight onto the chipboard, but what should i use onto the chipboard before the tile goes down?
The floor is split over 4 rooms, block and beam with chipboard surface, total about 50m2
seems to be nice and sturdy, (if i get the owner to jump up and down, i can only just about feel any movement at 3 or 4 metres away, is that solid enough?)
Do i need ditramat, or hardi boards, ? and what adhesive would you use to fix this down with?

Is the entire floor to be tiled covered with chipboard? only you state that it's over 4 rooms, is it all chipboard?

Hardi boards will not strengthen your floor, just create a satisfactory finish for tiling.

Hi, yes its thought that its all chipboard, still has laminate on most of it at the moment.

if the floors solid enough i would use 18mm ply screwed down every six inches bond the ply then use a flexi adhesive

if you can feel movement at 3 - 4 metres away , how much movement is there at the jumping up and down point ? , thats what you need to find out i reckon

Dave, dont think its what you would call a floating floor ?
was told its a block and beam?
i would normally ply it but they are a bit stuck for height in the kitchen area where the washing machine/tumble dryer goes. that was why i was hopeing to get away with just ditramat.
The other alternative was to use the hardi boards , but not sure of the adhesive to fix them to the chipboard

Ditra mat isn't for deflection issues.. just lateral stress etc..

Are there any fixings in the chipboard or is it laid onto polybase insulation..?

Dont think that would be an option Paul... someone else quoted for it and said all it needed was ditra, i'm just not 100% sure on how much flex you could get away with, dont get me wrong, you dont walk on it and think 'thats bouncey' or anything like that, but i can feel a very small movement

and that small movement is going to be enough is it not .............. , i aint no expert , just thinking out loud

Paul ,you could very well be rite, mmm..... i'm a bit stuck now, would the hardi boards not give it the slight help it needs? or is it likely i will have to use ply over the chipboard? may have to have a closer look to see what thickness i could get away with.

Hardi boards dont give strength to a floor, they provide a tiling surface.

Re: Ditra, Dural etc. I get concerned when I hear pro tilers using this type of de-coupling mat direct to T&G. Lateral movement is one thing deflection is another animal.

If i have the height, would i get away with 9mm ply screwed onto the c/board?, or are there other options?

hello kev there is two ways to go niv duo at 10 mm thick our dural anti crack matt with weber two part ad250/rapid set plus to fix matt then use weber spf to stick the tiles down but if you bought cheap trav ie about 25 pound a m2 you are running a risk as it just does not have the body and far to much filling

Hi Kev,

Floor base has to be solid before you start using any anti fracture membrane - strengthening the floor is not what it's for. Just make sure you are happy there is no deflection before clashing the Dural down mate

Hi mate do you use Dural, Ditra, etc direct on T&G. I use them and am a big fan, but only as a de- coupling membrane over ufh. Never on T&G only 18mm ply or backer- board. Deflection ya de ya
