Travertine

Hi All,

Tiling 3 bathrooms in 600 x 400 travertine this week, thing is there all to be tiled half way up apart from shower area. Looking for some ideas on how to finish top edge? would prefer to use a decorative tile to finish or make one myself!....I dont think trim will look good with stone, im sure you wil agree!

Hi, trim would't look good. You could just fill and polish tile edge, or get stone mosaic border. Or if your tile is 12mm, get some 20mm tile , cut in say 50mm strips and polish with big pencil finish

I used some trim recently on trav made by homelux. It was a pretty good match in colour and looked really good. That said I agree trim on stone doesn't look as good as the stone itself. I like a bullnose or a bevel and just a paint line to meet.

Thanks Tony! Im slightly concerned with how straight the wall is. When i first measured they only wanled shower area in each room done but now its whole lot half way up. There gonna be at least 5mm adhesive bed and maybe more if wall is bent so trying to think of solutions in advance. I also thought of ripping down a strip like you mentioned but then making a few passed 3mm deep through the dw2400 to make diagonal feature!

Thanks gamma, I think trim can be a good look but just not the right look for stone + will date. Whenever i tile a bathroom i always think 10 years in to the future with the view of if it will date and thats why i dont like using trim with anything other than ceramics tbh

Yes I'm with you there, in 10 years though they should be due another refit :hurray:

Bullnose and polish all edges of stone - the customer will love you for it.

Bullnosing is time consuming , so discuss with customer the extra costs before committing to doing it . but as TJ has said it does leave a great look and finish..


As for the deviation you say in the substrate , what are you tiling to ?

You can get a reasonably cheap set up from stonetools.co.uk. I get most of my bits from them, next day delivery as well.

Sound, is it to be skimmed after tiling .. ?

Yes i think so... Shower area is cement board and the rest is plasterboard, in thinking same as you, to skim to the top of the tiles?

Yep... this then will provide finish to not so straight edges at interface..
