There are many methods of how adhesive should be applied to a substrate to create that solid bed when tiling floors.

This video should help members that find it a little difficult to understand how this can be achieved.

It does say in the video that back buttering isn't necessary but IMO back skimming is and this is different to back buttering which is troweling the back of the tile as well , but back skimming is using the flat side of the trowel to fill in the pattern of the tile biscuit to 100% achieve that solid bed...

Crucial part of tiling that many tilers are completely oblivious to. Once you get into the way of it it doesn't really take that much longer - tile set on top of bucket, skimmed in 5 seconds and you've got a nice solid bed.

It's quite scary how deep the key on the back of a tile can be sometimes. 3mm on the underside isn't uncommon. That's a lot if you're depending on just the adhesive on the substrate to catch it, even with a 12mm trowel.

I think alot has to do with the design of the trowel too.
If you look that chap uses a deep notched trowel, but the serrations are very narrow, so that the adhesive will 'pop' when he gives them a wiggle.
Most of our notched trowels and to a point the half moon trowels, have wide teeth so it is almost impossible to create that lovely solid bed without over working the tile on the adhesive.
I wish the manufacturers made the trowels more like that design.
God what a bore i've become!!!!!
