UFH in wet room

Hi all, gladI found this forum, looks useful.

I have UFH in an outside wet room (converted garage). Its been laid in screed and tiled over. Been in for 6 weeks and I am about to turn it on. Was just going to turn it on full whack but luckily googled and came across this forum and assume if I was to do that the screed would crack!

The advice from some posts Ive seen here (if Im reading right) seems to be start at a low temp, leave it on and then go up in 5 degree increments. Is this right and if so what temp should I start at. Does the fact that its currently minus 1 degrees outside make a difference. Would I be better off waiting til the weather is a bit hotter so there wont be an extreme jump in temperature!

When you turn it on set the thermostat to floor temp only and it will show the ambient temperature of the floor. I would then go a couple of degree's a day until you reach the max temp you are going to run the floor at, them reduce it back to the ambient temp by a couple of degree's a day. You will probably find the ambient temp is around 15.....

How thick is the screed its in and what type of UFH have we got Electric/water?

Cheers John, its electric UFH. The only detail I have on the screed is that it was latex. I have no idea about thickness as the builder didnt tell me and I was too thick to check!

Do you have anything over the screed ie. tiles?
If it is just a latex screed then I'd go with post 2 from Stewart.
What make of UFH is it?

Yes we have ceramic tiles over it. Its WarmUp. Had a go today but got an error message - external failure contact warmup - :-(

Any ideas anyone

Was the mat tested and monitored during installation.......?

It was tested with a multimeter. What do you mean by monitored?

Monitored means connnecting a continuity alarm across the wires to detect whether a break in the cable occurs while tiling.

Thanks for your responses. I dont think it was monitored. Will chase up.

It could just be that it wasnt wired correctly. you could still do a continuity test to determine whether there is a break in the heating cable. Also check the thermostat probe.

As above, it might not be anything serious. If the mat was not monitored, it should have been tested several times throughout the tiling process to make sure that the mat had not been damaged.

Thanks all, it works when I put it on Air Temp. Control so presume there may be a problem with the floor sensor?
