Discuss UFH over black bitumen residue in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

Have lifted old thermoplastics and have half mm residue of still tacky 70's bitumen adhesive.

Advised by supplier that best to either grind it off or screw down tile backer boards before laying porcelain floor tiles.

What about UFH using 6mm insulated backer boards? Will the board be sufficient to prevent any problems arising once the UFH heats up the old bitumen adhesive?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Pablo,

In case products in the UK were the same as here.....I wouldn't grind the bitumen unless superior dust collection would be available. Bitumen adhesive (we call it blackjack) frequently contained asbestos fibers, even as recently as the 1970's.

Encapsualting it with backer board would be the best option IMO.

Can anybody help

Began striping old vinyl flooring Tiles to the concrete and found layer of the old black tar like adhesive, is some places felt a bit a tacky to touch.

Have bought Unibond tile on Floor Adhesive-Rapid set+over Asphalt & Vinyl Tiles.
This adhesive can be used on concreat and more, also is ready to grout in 3 Hours

Can this adhesive be used to Tile over the Vinyl tiles without having to strip them down to concrete.

Can I use this adhesive over the black like previouse adhesive.

Mix up a slurry of rapid set cement with a little sharp sand with a 70/30 mix of sbr/water. Roller it all over the bitumen until a few mm thick. This has always worked for me, and never failed. Cement faced insulation boards fit down fine onto this
