Under or round toilet?

Having a new bathroom fitted, and fully tiled. What is the recommendation - tile the whole floor then mount the toilet pan afterwards (on top of the tiles) or fit the toilet pan first then tile round it?
Either way I won't mount the cistern until afterwards.

I would def say fit toilet on top of tiles, will look nicer than to bury wc in floor and when you break it would be difficult to replace

Always have the toilet taken out or leave out until it has been tiled.
Make sure you solid bed fix the tiles under it for when you drill through for fixings and if your having underfloor heating make a plan and measure the cables to avoid drill damage.

As a keen amateur ALWAYS tile UNDER a toilet pan. Absolutely no point in tiling up to - especially if a new fit.

as a keen DIYer I did my first bathroom quite a lot of years ago it was already in place and I didn't have the nouse to take it out and tile. Tiled around the pan - did a reasonable job and sealed the joint with silicone. 2 years later it started to smell so I had a look and sure enogh the silicone had failed and water (and other noxious substances courtessey of 4 year old son with bad aim) had got under the pan, under the tiles started rotting the floor boards and gone black with mould. I have tiled and then put the pan on top ever sonce. On my 7th Bathroom now - no more problems.

Last weeks job had the toilet moved to directly over a run of four water pipes. Even stuck a poster note over the screw hole which had limited depth, just in case!

I had to cut round one today, only toilet in the house and cust wasnt happy at not having one for the night.

One good thing about working in new builds is that they usually have 2 lavs minimum, even if you do have to carry boxes of tiles up three flights of stairs. :mad2:

Always tile first if u can , if u ever want to change the toilet and ud tiled around ud b left with a ugly toilet shaped hole in the floor, plus its alot easier

Always preferable to tile floor and then fit the toilet. If you cut tiles to go around the toilet base and then have the misfortune to damage the toilet a few years down the line, you then have the problem of sourcing a replacement with exactly the same footprint.
Looks far neater with toilet sat on top of tiles too.
