Using black gloss tiles as an upstand

don't think my budget is going to run to glass upstands and splashbacks, so was thinking of using black gloss tiles instead. Looking at 10cm x 10cm ones, and making it just one tile high, with as small a grouting gap as possible and black grout. What do people think? Does anyone have a photo of a similar project. will one tile high look okay.

id say a 100x200 would look better

did think about 100 x 200 tiles, but would they look wierd where I'd have to have approx 8 rows of them to make splashback behind hob (as I couldn't put them in a staggered brick pattern).

weird, no you can still do a brick bond above cooker, have you thought about a smoked glass panel above cooker

Unfortunately the hob is in a corner (a bit weird but its the only place for it) so would need glass behind and to side, and to add to that the side wall is a strange depth so would have to be custom made, so cost may be preventative.

How would the part tiles at edge of splashback be finished off?

Porcelanosa do a black ceramic tile 1m x 330mm. I think it's Crystal Venis range, and the glaze just looks like glass. You could cut these in half lengthways or to whatever size you want to give you 2 linear metres per tile. You could quite easily take the tiles up behind hob to height of extractor and finish with a nice square or L shaped polished or brushed metal trim.
