Wall or Floor - Which comes first?

Evening all,

I'm doing a bathroom refit. Stripped it bare, re-studded due to previous owners bodge job and all the studwork had become rotten. - Plumbed everything ready for fit. Reboarded the Walls with cement board and taped all joints with silicon in the corners. The floors are clean and pva'd ready for the off.

My question is, which should done first, Floor or walls? Or is it a personnal choice?

And finally are there any top tips for tiling the bathroom?

I did that because its a dusty concrete floor that will be therma boarded ready for heating wire then tiled. So its only to be used as a sealant. Otherwise, why no PVA?

Hi Graham, I soon learnt not to use the pva word either!!! I always tile the Walls first simply to avoid splashing any adhesive or grout on a nice new tiled floor!!! Also if you drop a tool or tile on it you risk chipping a tile!!! Suppose it comes down to personal choice though. Hope that helps. Josh

No problem Graham ,if you are picking up joints with floor and wall tiles, it can be easier to tile the floor first, providing you have set out both walls and floor to ensure good cuts to all areas. It is possible to do this and tile the walls first, but you need to be spot on with your square. Good luck.

walls first for me to and drop the bottom row of cuts in last on the walls.

If the wall and floor tiles are the same size, you should line up the grout joints. Tiling the floor first makes this the easiest way to be sure the joints line up.
When setting out take some time to check that you wont end up with slithers of tiles. ie in corners, against door frames, windows etc... Try and keep it symmetrical with large cuts.

I normally tile the floor first. This is mainly so I can get a better finish on the floor wall joint. Most of the floor tiles I have laid are always larger then the wall tiles so not able to line up grout lines. I just seem to get a better finish laying the floor first then scribing the bottom row of the wall tiles as I do with the top row of the tiles to the ceiling. Always good to tile the walls first as there is always a chance you may damage floor tiles and contaminate the grout on the floor.

I always try & tile the floor 1st, strike a line on the wall, cut bottoms then tile up from there,

If we dont have time though batten the walls at the 1st row then drop the bottom row down after the floor has been tiled.

bathrooms over here are waterproofed (all floor area ) then you tile it to protect the waterproofing then the walls use drop sheets to protect the floor while doing walls .also if needed the floor can line up with wall tiles

How's, Sunny Tasmania? I've just waterproofed and therma boarded the floor ready for loose wiring tomorow. So that will be done first, then protected.

Just had a passing shower here but rest of the day is looking fine .and yes the tiles will help protect the ufh as well good point
