Wall prep

I'm on with a bathroom in 10mm calibrated slate and one of the walls is plaster on slate. Obviously the tiles are over weight for plaster, what are my options for preping it for the tiles?

Cement boards can't be dot and dabbed, plasterboard would be on the limit weight wise, so is my only option stripping it back to the slate and a sand cement render?:mad2:

What is the slate which has been plastered over fixed to.

Sorry, should have made that more clear, its a slate wall (lake district) and confusingly I'm tiling it with slate (Brazilian!)

hi james,ive never come across a slate wall as off yet to tile onto,my advice is pm doug boardley he lives in the lakes and i would imagine would have 1st hand experience of how you can aproach this

The thing that worrys me is modern materials onto a lime mortor wall, the reason the wall has survived for so long is the lime allows movement while sand/cement would not and there could be cracking if it was rendered.

Is the origanal slate done as a brick work fashion, any pics would help

i assumed this slate wall would be traditionally done for the area its in,the slate walls and houses in the lakes are amazing,as for fixing tiles to itive never come across it basically as there are no slate faced houses here :lol: dougs yer man
