wall preparation after old tiles removed

Have taken old tiles off solid wall in kitchen. The skim coat of plaster has come away with them leaving sand/cement base coat which is in good condition. The skim coat was only about 1-2 mm thick. Do I need to get the walls re-skimmed before re-tiling to get a decent finish on the new tiles, or just seal the base coat. If sealant, what's the best to use? The new tiles are 100 mm square if that's relevant.

Thanks Whitebeam, that's really good news. Haven't bought adhesive yet - thought i would get the tiles off first and see how that went. Have used Unibond and Wickes all-purpose in the past. What do you recommend?

The render is a better surface to fix to but I would advise you to prime the walls using SBR(Bal Bond) not PVA then I would use either Bal or Mapei,ready mixed adhesive

Do not patch in the walls with tubbed adhesive... wickes fast drying one coat is one i use now and again, just depends on the depth of the damage... see what happens once you have removed all the tiles.

I did not mean use the tub adhesive for skimming only for fixing if the walls are ok.its sometimes hard to comment without seeing the problem.

make sure the grey finish is sand and cement and not bonding plaster,as this would not be suitable to tile to...

Thanks to Andy, Dave and afright. All very helpful. The background is definitely sand & cement. Much happier now about getting a good result. Cheers
