Wall tiling - practice

Hi all,

I'm all set to go on the NETT course on 30th July. What I'd like to know is how to get some practice in? Unfortunately I live in a new apartment and this is rented, I cannot go tiling the bathroom or kitchen, so was wondering if I could get some ply or something and some tiles and practice on this? Even draw a 'dummy' sink on there?!

What you think, or am I being daft - lol?!

Hi Steg90.

Firstly well done for booking this course. its great and I cant say enough about it.

Only thing I would say is, depending on what tiling exp you have had I would wait until you have learnt what you need on this course and then practice.

But yes some Ply or chipboard will suffice for practicing.

Rreally the main thing you need to practice is the cutting, measuring, siliconing etc. Putting the tiles on the walls is the easy part really and speed wil come with work. Early jobs just take your time.

But having said that any practice in the meantime is good. Would just be better till after you have done the course, that way your not practicing any not so good methods, Best practice the best methods you will learn on this course.

Yeah, main bits to practice are the cutting on the dry n wet cutters, round sinks and toilets and so on.

Ditto what GatesheadCol, said, I was on the course a couple of months ago, you'll get all the info you need on it, practice after so as you'll be using 'best practice' methods. You won't be sorry

I don't know if you've seen my other thread, but I'm after a change in career. I've been a software engineer for over 14 years now earning a good salary ( £39800 ). What I plan on doing is trying to get small jobs at weekends and keep up my fulltime job, for a while anyway. Earning what I do I pay a lot of tax and having to get up at 5.30am every morning to beat the traffic is killing me! I am just a little worried about getting the work in, do you guys get a lot of work?

What I plan on doing is trying to get small jobs at weekends and keep up my fulltime job, for a while anyway. i would do a plumbing and gas fitting course where you will make the kind of money you are already on
tiling wont make you wealthy

Hi,

Plumbing courses are long and I was thinking you would need to get C+G qualifications? I don't want to be rich, just be ok. What is the average a good tiler can make?

i would say the average is around £25,000 to £30,000 i have been trading for some time and usaully make on average about £44,000 plus now .... but really depends on size of contracts and amount of hours you are willing to work to start with, i work 6 days a week all year round apart from hols and xmas obviously, used to work seven days but only work sundays now if its a neccessity..... dave......

I guess like any trade, it takes time to build up. £44k is great. I'd need around 20k a year to start with if I was to pack my job in to pay rent and a loan I have as well as the usual bills. This is why I'm going to look at just doing weekends for starts and evenings if possible and see how it goes; if I find I'm getting lots of work - only then will I consider packing in my full-time job and I will also aim to do a plastering course.

I have already got some business cards printed up, registered my website and looking at doing some advertising in the coming weeks even though I've not done my NETT course yet!
