Hi,

I heard a lot about wedi products at school, especially about the showers and wellnessobjects. Heard that wedi is of very good quality but also very expensive. Is it right that some Hotels have whole wellness-areas built with wedi products? Do you know any? I'm just curious and wanna find out a little bit more. Couldn't find any references of wedi, where you can find their products in hotels or swimming baths.
Do you know any?

Hi Kati, If I may be of help with installation questions, please let me know. We have gone through 4+ pallets of Wedi (over 200 sheets) in dozens of installations...overall we like the material and the fasteners. Wedi's proprietary sealant for the corners and seams is quite sticky and I think effective as long as care is taken to completely fill the seam/joint.

We have also used approximately 5 pallets of alternative foam-style backerboards, and there is no comparison with the quality of the Wedi product. As you noted however, the price is quite expensive. Here is the US, Wedi varies from ~$30 to $35 per 3'x5' panel. Custom Building Products makes a low-end lightweight backer board that is only $10.....a huge difference!

thanks for your offers.

I'm afraid, there's a missunderstanding
I'm more interested whether one can find wediproducts also in commercial buildings or only in private bathrooms. I already learned a lot about intallations in the private sector, but I'm still searching for information about the commercial one like Hotels and Spas....

The instructions for laying wedi floor panels on wood/plywood substrate say to screw the panel in place with the washers after the thinset has hardened beneath it.

When the adhesive has set the boards should be given additional strength from screw fixing ... at a rate of 5 per square metre, a minimum of 30mm from the board edge.

The panel from the US manufacturer Custom Building Products was mentioned above. Their instructions for securing their panel to the substrate say to screw the panel down while the adhesive is still wet.

I'm new at this, but fastening the board into hardened thinset feels counter-intuitive to me. Wouldn't that cause the thinset to crack beneath the panel?

Perhaps wedi doesn't want the adhesive to be squished thinner in the vicinity of the fastener? Is that why they say to wait for it to harden?

The reason I ask is that I'm about to lay wedi panels down myself.

I've used Wedi for a few projects. And I've checked installation with their support dept. before. Yes, you apply the board (if going on a solid wall) using a dot and dab technique, just like you would fix plasterboard. You wait till the adhesive is dry - before drilling it - then you hammer long dowels through the holes deep into the wall. They tell me it is the dowels that do all of the work. Not the adhesive. And when you think about it, this is probably true. As if you were screwing the board to a timber stud wall, the work would be done only by the fixing points.

I imagine like you say, that you wait for it to dry, because otherwise you will have to drill through wet adhesive (messy) and you can get the board flat first, while the adhesive is still wet - so it won't move once dry and you hammer in the dowels. the adhesive is flexible - so will not crack.

As I've said many times before. Wedi is a superb product. Expensive maybe. But it works. However, other tanking solutions are available and I may be trying them out very soon.

Kati - could you not simply phone wedi and ask them?

Also, if you look at their website, they have plenty of examples of its use in the commercial sector. I think they have enough examples there to please your needs.
