I've got 2 bath panels to tile, the frames are built and the tiles bought. The tiles are 300x200 and quite light.
I've been looking at Wedi board to build the front panels. I thought this was quite expensive at £134 inc VAT & postage (I couldn't find anywhere local). The price came from this place by the way - Wedi tilebacker board, save 29% off Rrp at fountaindirect.co.uk (2500x1200x10)
I've since noticed that Marmox tiler backer is a lot cheaper than Wedi. I need 4 Marmox boards (1250x600x10) and even with the minimum order qty of 6, it works out around £65. £75 with some steel washers.
So my questions are:-
1) Is Wedi that much better than Marmox?
2) If it is better, would it matter for this job?
3) Do any of the big builders merchants supply Marmox?
4) Do you have to use the Marmox tape? I have a few reels of plasterboard tape left over, would this be ok?
ETA - My tiler/bathroom fitter refused to use a backing board. He preferred plywood and PVA. One of these baths is new and part of a refurb project. The other is in my own house. I had to remove the panel to fix a leak and not a single tile had adhered to the panel!
He's off the job now and I'm busy sponging and scraping PVA from the bathroom walls
