What are the next steps after taking a training course?

Hi

I am going on a 6 week training course at the end of October to learn wall and floor tiling. I am a novice at tiling but the course aims to give you an NVQ level 2 at the end of the 6 weeks.

My problem is where do I go once I have finished my course. Do I need to get friends and family to give me work to build up my portfolio of work? Do I need to get an apprenticeship when I finish and if so where do I look to get one. I do not have any contacts in the construction industry but want to get my hands dirty & do a manual job. My current job is a boring 9-5 which is making me redundant in October so I thought this would make a great opportunity for a career change.............

hi cathy, welcome to the forum :welcome:. personally, i followed the route your thinking of. I found that by telling family and friends about my intentions i had work lined up immediately after doing my short course. they understand that you'll be slower than a pro and at the same time you have the leeway to take your time and do a good job. as you progress you'll pick up speed and confidence to take on other jobs. At the same time you'll have the resource of this forum to answer any queries, which will be invaluable. all the members are more than helpful and friendly and there's a wealth of information and tips available. good luck

you don't need to worry about apprenticships,but you can pick up nvq qualifications as you go with an assessor from certain colleges,once you have finished your course then working for friends and family is a great way to build up experience without the pressure of trying to make money and creating your own portfolio,then i would be looking at putting business cards into diy shops,builders merchants,tile shops etc and maybe an ad or 2 in a local newspaper

Hi Cathy, do you know anybody who work in large offices or factorys, get your cards in there and get your friends to gossip about you! Don't expect to make a fortune , go that extra inch for customers, quality over speed and get tha vacuum cleaner out when you finish. You can do the best job in the world but if you leave a mess you needn't have bothered. Good luck
