i know tanking is a watrproof membrane, but if water got behind the tiles the wall would be protected, but would the tile adhesion be weakend by the water

No...it is water resistant and won,t break down in contact with it.....swimming pools etc are done in cement based adhesives and suffer no probs.....

White Star is also water resistant but not to the extent that it can be permanently immersed in water. Moisture would still track through to the substrate and possibly damage it though the adhesive would not breakdown and would still hold the tile - 'til the substrate gave up or, being a disperant adehsive it would evenutalluy give up the ghost. Though it would need a lot of moisture to do so.what if white star had been used and not cement based addy?
