whats backerboard?

Can anyone please advise me what backerboard is and is it known by another name.
I was always under the belief that ply as an underlay was 12mm min, but ive seen some say that 6mm backerboard is ok.

Cementous board which has more strength than ply so can be used thinner than ply

In short, Little5, it's really what we'd all like to be tiling onto!

Except the floor has to adequately braced as it does not add strength to the floor.

Not all. I want to tile on my own sand and cement screed or sand,cement,lime render any day.
