What's the best stone for

A fire hearth ,under a wood-burning stove please ? .

Something dark Dave, it tends to get sooty and a bit grubby around wood burners. Something like slate or maybe a black limestone.

A nice big piece of slate dave,something from a old snooker table,done a few for folk,you can get em from reclamation yards around my way

Slate, there are often some very good pieces available on eBay.

Don't get something honed though, it marks very easily. Riven, brushed, antiqued or otherwise textured is far easier to live with.

Go to eBay type in "Slate Hearth", there's load to choose from.

Be careful with the slate, if you got too big a piece it will tend to crack, but if you do decide to go for slate split the thing in half (or more) before you fix it so that it can expand. Granite is less likely to crack
