whats up with site work

hi peeps,what seems the problem with site work,as ive heared some tilers dont go near it,for example me and the bossman was in the wholesaler and a tiler came up to him and asked if he had any work,as he had gone quiet,my boss said yes but its site work,this chap said thanks but no thanks,its not that bad,im just starting out and im doing floors and walls with different size tiles and patterns,and i can earn good money?

Could be a number of things money, CSCS card, rules/regulations etc etc etc Site work has been good to me for years but it isn't everybodies cup of tea for one reason or another, your boss may have had a lucky escape also.

I don't think money is the biggest issue, my problem with site work is that there is always someone in your way, rooms aren't ready when they are supposed to be and the plumber needs to run the pipes in for the shower after you have tiled:lol: Oh and someone always wants to borrow your tools on a long term basis :lol:

isnt thats why the site agent is there for, to tell you when the rooms are ready,i if any tradesman is good they normally have there own tools...

theres nothing wrong with site work, i know many site tilers and they make a good living from it, when i started tiling i spent 15yrs doing site work.

however i much prefer private work now, with site work its more about quantity rather than quality, and i much prefer to take my time and do a good job nowadays, plus i dont think i could stand another 'site winter' :lol:

Whats wrong with that? Apart from Frozen water supply? eh the fact its freezing ... Seriosuly this isnt a good thing, standing on a site for 4 days unable to work 1 because the water had frozen and 2 because the min temps had been exceeded by at least 10Deg. There is good and bad with everything.

Theres nothing wrong with sitework PY but you do need a sitework attitude where you bang out the meterage, if you can do it and enjoy it then theres money to be made, a lot of blokes shy away from it , this guy wasnt that hard up as he wouldnt take the work offered

i was working on site the other week with a german tiler,and he said i am really pleased with myself i have only been working in england for 6 months and i can already speak polish

thanks for all comments,im just starting out,and its gonna be my first winter on site with the company.i suppose its a good place to to learn my trade,and then move on to private work

Site work will make or break you and if you can't stand up for yourself and make yourself heard then it's not the place to be. I always found being 6'4" and not being very tolerant of other trades nonsense and being a good tiler, held me in good stead......

Maybe I'm weird but I love site work! Just finished tiling in a new build leisure centre, long straight walls where 30m2 was going up every day. Right next to a beach and the sun was shining every day:smilewinkgrin: Don't know if I'm just lucky but i've worked on dozens of sites over the last 7 years and apart from the odd REMOVED day here and there I've never had any major problems.

I started on site back in 71 and they great places to work, last time was 3 years ago, has it changed so much for the worst.
