whats ya view on laser range finders

hi all thinking of getting a laser disto measure any one got one bosch do a few any input would be great :8: ps i know they are dear but rekon they would save time quoting

Jay, how's it going mate? My first post got lost :mad2: , but here is a summary

Get one-you'll love it and wonder how you ever did w/o it. I saw the Bosch in Home Depot for only ~$100 after I bought my bottom-of-the-line Stabila for $150. These things are great for measuring large jobs and for long distances-saving your time for drawing diagrams in your notes rather than reeling in the tape.

For short distances many times the old standby is quicker.

Many of these laser units have functions like figuring area, slope and all kinds of stuff that I didn't need.

I am a tape man....but have thought about a disto meter a few times....so would be looking at what gets recommended here..

Hi Dave, I was too....and still rely on my old-school Lufkin folding rule when it really counts...but the laser is sweet when measuring larger distances.

Bought a laser measure, not an expensive one used it a couple of times then went back to the tape

I've used a few, one a very good brand, my opinion, they suck, you can get different measurements every time if your surface isn't flat, if your not holding it straight / level it can vary quiet a bit/ lot.

Hi Alan,

I didn't trust the darn thing for weeks....I always measured everything twice because I was sure I couldn't rely on what it was telling me. The most variation I get with the Stabila is 1/16".

I just measured and ordered a very expensive shower door, and for the first time I relied solely on the laser. Then I got cold feet and went back to the job and measured again with the folding rule with the extension insert-I got the same measurement as with the laser.

It definately takes some getting used to.

Exactly Jay - I got a Hilti a few years back, fantastic time saver in estimating. Have to say I only use it for that rather than during the work, except on pretty long floor runs.
In fact a friend of mine got a Leica one recently - great price £100.00 and should be accurate from them!
