When to tile around bath and basin?

Hi

We have just had all our walls and celling skimmed in our bathroom and I wanted to know when the best time is to tile around bath and basin. We are looking at only applying tiles around 2 to 3 tiles high with a line of mosaic tiles in between.

Do I miss coat the walls first then paint and then apply the tiles or miss coat then tiles then final paint?

Also do I paint right down to edge of bath or do I measure what height the tiles will be and only paint down to them.

Does plaster need to be treated before applying tiles

Don't apply any paint until the tiling is done, what tile adhesive will you be using and what tiles will be fixed as in porcelain, ceramic etc.

Am not sure on tile type yet but we are doing it on a budget. Does it matter which tile type we use then?

So its best to tile and grout around bath and basin before miss coating and painting the walls and celling

Yes for the walls, do the ceiling first though....

Do I have to treat the skim that the tiles are going onto with anything before I apply them or can I just tile straight on the bare skim.

Also would I need to worry about the weight of tiles on the skim with only 3 lines of tiles?

If you use tubbed adhesive a few state not to prime the walls and apply directly to new plaster but allways read manufacterers instructions, weight may not be an issue with only 3 tiles high but again thats why I asked what tiles...if ceramic then you would be fine.

Did you do the rest of the bathroom work yourself? as in, plumbing, plastering, electrics perhaps. Why not get a quote from a local Tiler????

Well me and the wife went into the local Tile shop today and we seem to like this type Brighton Lilac-W1600.jpg Brighton Lilac Wall Tile Local tile place is selling them for £16 sqm and tilehq has them for £9.90. They seem very heavy as I keep worrying about the new skim on the wall holding them up.

I did have a few people off here to quote the other month to have the whole bathroom tiled but we cannot afford to have it all tile now so that's why we picked to do around bath and basin around 2 to 3 tiles high.

You think it would cost much to get someone in to do these small area's

Professional trades people invest a lot of time and money on tools and knowledge. A proper professional job, will cost proper professional money.

Everything costs, plumbers, sparks, plasterers - yet on most jobs Tiling is where the money is saved, even though its the finish that people will see the most. That's life I suppose
