Where to advertise

Hi guys.

I'm in the final stages of starting my own business and I was wondering where, in everybody elses experience, was the best place to advertise for work.

I am planning on leaving business cards at tile shops, estate agents and other diy shops. I was also going to take out an ad in the local paper and possibly yellow pages. I have contacted other trades eg. plumbers and plasterers to ask them what sort of response they got from yellow pages. The reaction was quite mixed. I asked them if they would keep me in mind if they needed a tiler.

I am thinking about starting a website with a portfolio of my work and testimonials. I also thought it would be an idea to post my picture on there so that potential customers can know who to expect at their do.

Does anybody have any opinions on my methods of gaining work, and also any other ideas that have been successful

all sounds good to me . i have also been on the internet listing my business with as many free listings as possible. ie yell.com ,thomson local, even google there is loads out there just go on and search . it results in loads of emails asking you to pay for your advertising but i just ignore it. a family member runs his own business and was a bit annoyed when i got a job from yell.com and he didnt even get a phone call. i pay nothing he pays 3 or 4 hundred a year
