Which Primer?

Hi, Am I correct in assuming that a primer such as Ardex P51/BAL APD is necessary for bonding to the substrate, when using cementitious adhesives and a PVA primer for ready mixed adhesive. Could someone explain the differance between BAL SBR & APD. Thanking You, Jeff

APD is a modified acrylic polymer for priming surfaces for use with cement based adhesives and screeds.It isolates products that contain Calcium Sulphate,such as gypsum plaster , anhydrite screeds and cemet based adhesives minimising reaction between the two. BAL bond SBR however is waterbased polymer to use as an admix or bonding agent,mainly for use with pre mixed or tub adhesive.:wink_smile:

PVA or Poly Vynil Acetate should never be used Jeff is totally water dispersal and does nowt,Bal bond SBR is not PVA its modified polymer and superb for walls tub gear only

Hi Gaz, Thanks for the advice. In future when I lay ply overlay I will use BAL Bond SBR on the underside & edges to seal it ready for tiling. Thanks, Jeff

Hi, I will use BAL Bond SBR on the underside & joints of the ply and use BAL Prime APD on the tiling surface of the ply, ready for BAL Rapidset Flexible adhesive. Thanks Jeff

hi jeff mate when priming ply use bal bond sbr neat, bal apd is more for priming plaster and priming concrete....apd can be used on timber but sbr is better as it remains tacky and increases the bond between andhesive and ply....

Hi dhceramics, Thanks for advice. I would guess that Ardex Ardion 51 Priming & Bonding Agent is similar to BAL APD. Used for priming plaster & Concrete for Cement based adhesives only. Regards, Jeff

hi jeff . i tend to use bal products all the time, so in regards to p51 it is used for concrete and plaster surfaces....heres a link of technical data for you....dave..

Hi, Have just downloaded the BAL Product cat. They recommend priming plaster withBAL Bond SBR 1:4 or 1:1 BAL Primer APD. Ply is BAL Bond only. Jeff

Hi, I find Bal Grout supurb to use, but never used BAL adhesive. Always used Biscem. My supplier does not keep BAL stuff! I have to go top Topps Tiles in Leeds, which I find expensive not having an account with them. I buy BAL Grout from Topps only, as you know whare you stand with it! Jeff

never used biscem products so can't comment jeff... i use c.t.d. for my bal gear and i get excellent discounts....
