Which primer

Hello,
I went to buy tiles from local shop today and the guy in there advised me to prime my plywood over board with Pva glue and water to prevent it from rotting should any moisture get in there after tiles are down. Thing is I have read I should not do this. Any views on this or any recommendations on products would be helpful. Cheers

what adhesive are you using, pva is a big no no

PVA is a no no. Primer will not prevent the moisture from getting into the wood and will not prevent rotting. The tiles are there for that.

Use the recommended primer for your adhesive. Under no circumstances do you use PVA in tiling....... If they don't tell you on the bag, call their tech line and they'll sort you out. I use Larsen's and Nicobond primers, as thats what adhesive I normally use.

Thanks, I'm using mapei keraquick flex. So is it essential to prime in the fact that the tiles protect the wood from moisture. Sorry for basic questions it's only my second job...,..

You do not normally prime the face side of ply when used for tiling... you do however if possible prime the edges and back face with a suitable SBR type primer to help with moisture stabilisation from beneath the ply ...

so i should leave the side of the ply which the tiles go on as it is, and seal the edges and the side which faces the floor? could you recommend a sbr primer which i could buy in the likes of b&q?

Try your local builders merchants and get some Everbuild SBR.

You can apply it neat as it is for sealing the non-tiling face but it can be diluted too.

B&Q warehouse sell SBR.. 5 ltr is 15 quid.. good as well.. Cementone is the brand... recognised in the building trade..

Brilliant that's great thanks. Just one more question before I crack on..... Do you tend to leave a small space between the tile and the skirting board and fill with grout or take the tile right up to the skirting so it's on contact with it?

if your laying to the skirt leave a 2mm gap and Silicon the joint dont grout most on here remove skirt an replace on top of tile

or remove skirting tile to wall leaving 2/3 mm gap then when grouted replace skirting ,makes a much tidier finish imo
