Writing a report

I went to have a look at a bathroom, that has been ruined by the plumber/tiler who did this work. He was'nt paid the full amount,and is taking the customer to court. In reurn the customer is putting in a counter claim, and has asked me to do a report on the work done.

I have never written a report, and was wondering if any one on the forum could give me a few tips on how to set out about this. Thanks

I know there was a long thread about this a while ago and it seemed the conclusion was are we qualified, what happens if you have to go to court and your asked of your degree of knowledge.

Would a C&G or an NVQ 2-3 be enough.

In what capacity have you been instructed to provide a report!
Are you a specialist in this particular type of tiling, are you a member of a trade organisation of any standing, or like most of us 'just a tiler' with a few years experience!
If it goes to court you have to ask yourself was the couple of hundred quid worth the hassle.
Its all too easy to pull others work to pieces but often you don't know the conditions/restraints that are put on the installation and you'll only hear 1 side.

If you do give evidence make sure your 100% right. Telling a customer its not right, and been prepared to take time off work to prove this in court are two different things altogether. Personally I would stay away from this unless you were well compensated to give your expertise.

I doubt a normal run of the mill tiler's word would stand up in court.

The court would want an expert witness report anyway ,and these guys are very very qualified !! i have used one recently and it has cost thousands ,not hundreds,unless you have Degrees professors-ships don't waste your time , there are people out there who specialise in this field ............. and would blow-tradesmen away...........

Must be handy to have a degree. A QS done a few drawings for me last week. £150 and I'd say 2 hours did it. :lol:

Most i would do is write a statement of works. Don't apportion blame just simply state what work from prep to finish you had to do.
Small claims would of instructed a QS but as the plumbers work has been rectified now itll lie solely on your opinion.
Id be climbing back on the fence. Youve done your bit and given the client what they wanted.
Any issues prior tp you starting work is between the other parties.

You need professional indemnity insurance to do a report, or it could bite you on the bum. I have refused to do them many times.

I wouldnt do it either, not worth the hassle. Often such reports are used by the householder to have a bash at the tradesman, valid or otherwise. You dont want to get caught in the crossfire and you dont want a brick coming through your window either.
