Discuss Wunda underfloor heating in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

Hi anybody tiled directly onto the aluminium Wunda boards . I searched and googled for ages before doing this job and done everything by the book . Primer ,s2 adhesive ,, butter the tiles ect ect . Finished phase one and it just doesn’t feel right under foot . I’m an old school 53 year old and just can’t make sense of all this lightweight, flexible modern stuff . Including a few pics . Also how long do you think it would take you to tile this 32 meters on your own . Zero labour / help ??
Cheers

What feels wrong under foot? Does it sound hollow? What size trowel did you use? (you can't dot and dab tiles - hope you didn't do that?)

It appears you've done it to their spec.

No specialist tools are required, they can be simply cut to shape using a fine toothed saw or craft knife. MAPEI, INSTARMAC and NORCROS approved for tiling onto - Using Mapei & Instarmac approved S2 flexible adhesive and primers please Refer to factsheet FO1b

Tiles can be fixed to the boards using Mapei or Ultra approved adhesive (available from Wunda) when using Ultra method just prime the aluminium first. If you wish to carpet or lay vinyl a suitable backer board will need to be laid on the Overfloor boards. The recommended maximum linear loop length for a 16mm board is 60m. The recommended maximum linear loop length for a 20mm board is 100m.

Hi dan , everything sounds hollow so to speak . When you walk on the bare wunda board there is a certain amount of softness you can feel . Maybe I’m just to old school for this . Every tile is fully stuck , every tile is buttered . How long do you think 100 meters of this should take on your own , no labour ?

I think the hollow sound will just be the way it is. Once it's tiled fully and grouted it'll feel a bit more rigid I think. The insulation boards do give a little when you're walking over them. Using a board to spread your weight when your knees are on them might help a little but I doubt it'll be a problem if you didn't use a board.

I'm not a tiler myself mate so it'd take me forever.

This thread might give you a bit of a guide as to how much people are fixing per day.

It's a lot harder when doing herringbone though. All cuts become a maul.

Lol. I’m not a tiler either . I’m actually a carpenter but I helped the best tiler in the world (rip) years ago . Turns out I’m a better tiler than most who are dedicated tilers . Yep herring bone is nothing but a pain . All out of square so not even one repeat cut

Who did you work with mate?
You wouldn’t know him . Jimmy Harrington . Class above the very best . I’ve met some great , gifted tradesmen but he was just simply the best . Only problem was you couldn’t earn a penny off him , his jobs usually cost us money , but it was worth it .

Lovely to hear his skills have been passed on a bit then.

Got any pictures of the jobs?

If not take your phone next time you have chance! :D
Here’s a 20 mm thick porcelain patio and staircase I just recently done for the same friend as I’m doing the herringbone for .difference is the staircase was business the herringbone is his home . Done all the shuttering and cast the curved staircase as well . Would love to pass it on to another youngster but I don’t think I have the tolerance levels needed for a millennial. Lol
