hi all, doing a bathroom and i think the fella has put a pva coat on his new plaster skimmed walls, can i tile straight onto it or will i have to score some lines onto the walls so the tile adhesive will bond to the wall.

Has he put pva onto the wall after it's been skimmed of before it was skimmed to get the plaster to adhere? If it's the first option then he's probably thinking he has done you a favour by sealing the surface; unfortunately most DIYers think this.

I wouldn't recommend tiling straight onto plaster without a primer anyhow due to potential chemical reactions between the gypsum and tile adhesive (mainly cement based). Use bal APD primer or PCI primer G in accordance with the instructions, allow to dry thoroughly then use an acrylic based adhesive; just to be sure.

If in doubt ring the BAL help line and they'll give you some good advice.

i think he has used just normal pva glue mixed with water. cheers for the reply it has helped loads

i have just phoned the customer and he has not put any pva or primer on the plaster. he has let it dry for 2 weeks. so will i have to prime the wall or can i just tile straight onto the plaster.

I think plaster has to be dried out for 4 weeks before it can be tiled upon. Check with one of the more expierenced guys first tho. Also it will still need priming with BAL APD in my opinion....
