Travertine Pavers with no grout

I am laying travertine pavers over an existing reinforced concrete surface. The concrete surface is in good shape with only minor surface cracks.

I want to lay my travertine pavers (french pattern) in thinset mortar without any spacing between the pavers.

Do I need to allow for expansion or can I place the pavers without space between them. This area is not exposed to direct sunlight.

Ok.. Tumbled edge..

These are traditionally laid tight together and a perimeter joint left..

The pattern set does not allow for any sort of noticeable joint or the pattern does not interlock.


Just like this one here that has no jointing compound. >>>

I was interested in your pic of the tumbled travertine and the nil grouting / joint approach.
I have often layed tumbled travertine, marble and limestone internally using joints ranging from 2mm up to 10mm depending on client perference. Presumably if your laying these outside, the nil grout / tight joint to for drainage.? This then leads to the question, what substrate have you used, how do you allow for lateral undertile drainage and what max area do you consider practical before the need to allow expansion joint in the main body of the stone layout.

I was in Porcelanosa Cardiff recently and they have recently introduced a patio / balcony ' tile ' that is on adjustable legs and no joints so the water drains through completely onto the hard surface below. The legs are adjustable for height variations. Product does not appear to be porcelain or Ceramic or stone but a resin based natural looking stone type finish.

The pave layers screed the bed and lay direct... but my supplier does not recommend these outside 30mm paver's to be grouted.

I suppose you could silver sand them.. like block paving..

As long as the base is flat and you fix solid.. i don't see why not..
