    board it out floor to ceiling would be my choice if it's feasible. Any steps or ledges down by the tray will be a nightmare regardless of how well its done. just my tuppence and a free bump :)

    Here is some before’s. Previous tray dropped due to a weak truss and badly repaired old stair well. We’ve been In the house 8 years, and I knew it wasn’t great, but didn’t expect the rot I encountered. Much strengthening and repairing of the floor that started back in March last year.

    not at all, easy to replace. The old screws are thinner, so all good. I'd use 5x50 countersunk woodscrews. Screwfix gold are quite good and inexpensive. Get a countersink bit while you are at it...

    Basically any wood screw would be better. I wouldnt go less than 4 mm diameter. ideally 4.5 or 5mm. Drywall screws are 3.5mm diameter and not great for corrosion. used in a structual application they are thin and brittle and wont take any sheer load. Over time they will snap as the floor gets...

    I’m not an expert, but he seems to be almost grouting with adhesive. Are you just seeing the darker adhesive shining through on the finished bits?

    Silicon will fill any void within reason and do the same job regardless of width, but it’s never going to look pretty at an inch wide?! You need the joint open enough to get a nice bead of Silicon forced in, but narrow enough to get a nice clean Finished line. free bump more than anything...
