Perfect Tiling

Can't you lower the tray so that you only need the 6mm hardibacker. I have done a couple of jobs where the flooring was removed and cut to fit between the joists with extra dwangs to support it. This meant the tray was now just proud of the floor so a slim board could be used to level off. This also meant that there wasn't too big a step into the room. In your case, adding 25mm boards plus tiles and adhesive could leave you with a 35mm floor difference.
