600 x 600 porcelain tiles...

Hi, Is it OK to fix 600 x 600 porcelain tiles directly onto a brick wall or should I seal the wall first with somthing? I have been told by a plasterer that I should put a concrete mix on the wall first, but I thought it would be more secure to attach the tile and adhesive directly to the brick wall? any help would be much appreciated, Thanks:yikes:

some tilers fix straight onto masonry, personally I'd like it either sand and cement rendered or dot and dab plasterboarded.

if the wall is flat enough then there should be no problems,either that as doug says dot an dab plasterboard or preferably hardie-backer

yes its ok to tile directly onto brickwork BUT there are a few thing to consider...
1. is this a domestic or commercial situation? just thinking of the insulation/thermal requirements??
2. is this an old building? are the walls traditional 9 inch or modern cavity?
3. what kind of brick are you tiling onto? face brick, concrete/engineering brick
4. also, how high are you tiling? mechanical fixing may be needed also.

Thanks for all the response, its a 6 foot by 7 foot bathroom in a new extension, bricks are new and flat. From what has been said it looks like i'll PVA the wall and use water and mould resistant adhesive. Cheers!:lol:

Don't use PVA use an acrylic primer!!!

These are porcelain tiles so check your adhesive carefully.

Gotta get the right adhesive as John says...its amazing how many people still try to put porcelain up with tubbed adhesive...they go up easy enough...but they always come down a lot easier...and not when you want them to!!!
