Hi guys,

Newbie mistake combined with some duff advice:mad2:

I've put 6mm hardiebacker around my bath (which includes a shower) !?! I obviously didn't ask the right questions when i bought it. The bath, shower etc is plumbed in.

I'm looking to use a 600mm x 400mm 10mm stone tile, depending on the sales!

The board is screwed (with a lot of screws) to new timber stud at 400mm centres. I have access to the back of the walls, so can i infill the studwork with plasterboard or 12mm ply. Or can i wedge in a load more noggins. With a good adhesive (that i'll check on here first) will this be ok?

Thanks in advance.

Liam

I've just spoken to their technical support.

6mm is fine for stud walls as long as you have 400mm centres, suitable noggins and screwed in. The load strength is exactly the same in the 6mm and the 12mm. They mainly do the 12mm because it fits with standard wall plasterboard, and 6mm for floors for a lower profile.

So i'll risk it, as the tiles I'm looking to put on aren't exceeding 40kg per sqm.

Hope that helps someone if they find themselves in a similar position.

Cheers

Bit of a late reply but it might help anyone else with same issue. I used 6mm Hardie on an alcove shower wall. It was only an 800mm span and the centres were 200mm or less. The main issue is the flex. I had to use it because I needed to keep the intrusion into the shower space as minimal as possible due to to needing to fit a specific shower door.
I think 400mm centres is too much for 6mm Hardie unless you have a lot of noggins making up for it. Also, I had to pull a couple of tiles off 6mm Hardie (cos I got rushed to pack up one evening) which resulted in the Hardie getting trashed. I might have gotten away without needing to replace the board had it been 12mm.
