By way of introduction, here I go:

Having just turned 42, I've finally come to the conclusion that I want to do a 'proper job' such as tiling, rather than sitting on my backside all day long staring at a screen (or out of the window)

I've worked in I.T. for the last 15 years as a programmer, tester, analyst and I'm just sick and tired of all the bullsh*t, backstabbing, politics and all round hassle. It's time for a change

I've been wanting to jack it all in and do something useful for the last few years, it's just been a case of finding the final motivation and the type of job I want to do. Now I have - I want to be a tiler and also someone who can plaster as an additional service to offer.

I'll start with tiling and I chose that as the idea of accuracy and precision is something I bang on about in my present job and firmly believe in. Until 5 years ago I had no DIY experience whatsover, but since then I've gradually found that I'm not entirely useless after all.

I'm going to spend the next few weeks reading this board, gaining some knowledge on the types of courses available and any qualifications and take it from there, so hopefully I can keep the questions to a bare minimum.

What are my aims? - minimum of a 2 week course in tiling and possibly qualifications. My local college in Poole will be running evening classes in plastering, so hopefully I will take that course as well, as a bolt-on.

Then maybe see if I can get some part-time work for a local tiling firm and then after a suitable period, go it alone.

I fully appreciate that you are all busy and that there are obviously a lot of new 'introduction emails' on this site, so please there is no need to post a response, it's just for you all to get some background info on me.

Regards
Simon

Any Oldham Athletic fans on here?

Thanks very much folks.

I'm waiting to finish my present project at work, collect my bonus and then jack it in. I've got a couple of months yet, just a case of reading the info on here and deciding on which course to take and for how long.

I'm looking forward to it already. I don't expect to earn a fortune, not yet at least! but a steady income and working for myself are big motivating factors.
