Hi there, I am looking for a drastic change in career. I am currently working in a 9-5 in an office and I have always wanted to go solo and run my own business. I have been looking into taking a training course and I'm just trying to work out my best options. Here's the problem... I have never done any tiling before in my life and I understand there is no substitute for experience but what training would be the best for me? I have seen an 8 week course that seems pretty comprehensive... Is it possible for someone to do a course like that and be a competant tiler? I will only be starting small and just putting in as many hours as possible to learn.

Your advice would be much appreciated!

Hi & welcome.

I had only done a couple of very small floors and walls in my own properties, but like you, fancied a major career change (mid-life crisis in my case). I did a 4 week course with PTS and gained enough knowledge, confidence and experience to immediately go full time. If you search on me you will see some of my posts and responses with regards to how I got started.

Long story made short, did the course at end of November, started full time in January, only had 3 working days in Jan without work, now booking 4 to 6 weeks in advance and gonna earn £1k profit for 4 days work this week - Happy days!!!

There's no substitute for hard work but if you want to make a success of it, you will!

Good luck and PM me if you want the long rambling story of how I changed from a dull 9 to 5, to exciting and physically callenging 8am to 9pm (but there's no way I'm going back!).

My advice is search Captain Slows and The Wright Tilers threads.......read them all.......copy them......don't try to re-invent the wheel, the answers are all there....it's what I have been doing......hope they don't mind lol :grouphug:

And welcome to the forums.......a mine of information available to you here!

Cheers everyone... you're a very helpful bunch!

My thinking at the moment is to go part time at my current work if possible and leave 4 days free for tiling and trying to get as much experience as possible. That training centre in Essex that Captain Slow recommended looks great but I live in Leeds so I probably need to find somewhere local to save on costs. Does anyone know anywhere good?

And Captain Slow I would be interested in your long rambling story... cheers matey!
