To get the jobs you have to network.
We just moved back to the city (1500km move) and so we have been building our network all over again from scratch.
It is always a gauntlet.
For the past 12 years we never advertised as all our work was referrals, but we lived in a small community.
Now we have been working for various stores (who gouge on the labor)
and have been slowly getting known just through people we meet who are building or renovating.
Best advice would be to persist in finding a tile guy who needs an eager, conscientious helper and work for them till you are confident enough to take on your own work.
When I started out I would buy a new tool with every pay cheque, even if it was just a trowel.
I started with a big tool box and slowly filled it.

A small 1/4 ton pickup with a topper would work cheaper than a van.
I used to run a 1.5 ton cube van, but she was such a hog for fuel I had to park her and now is just a storage wagon.
I run a 1/2 ton crewcab pickup with a topper now and bring my gear in every night as we live in the city and stuff can grow legs if you leave it out overnight.
