hi mat..if you use a trowel that has teeth deeper than they are wide then this is a solid bed type and is much better to use to get a solid fix.......

you will only need a bigger notch on walls if the walls are slightly uneven or using big tiles other wise a small notch will do...maybe 6x6...twist the tiles slightly to achieve a good fix....hope this helps you mate...good luck.....

Well I wandered round to the local topps at lunch time to buy a trowel and the woman sold me a "Professional Thick Bed Trowel". It says "13mm round notch for thick bed adhesive" Is this the correct one or does it need to go back? They didnt seem to have anything else in stock other than 6mm x 6mm square notch trowels!

Considering the walls are completely flat it seems like I'm going to be using a hell of a lot of adhesive!

If you are using a standard size tile ( under 40 x 30 cm ) then a 6mm notched will be ok...lightly backskim the tiles to get solid fix.....as long as the walls are flat...dont forget to prime......lol lol...........
