Not sure of the exact technical jargon - but expect it is due to composition of the material, strength, water absorbtion.
Just know that plywood is always recommended - not MDF, HARDBOARD or CHIPBOARD 🙂

lovely job leather m8!! another method for setting out >> fit batten level 1 or 2 courses from floor , cut some tiles in half , fix complete row using half tile every second tile, stick with rapid spf, by the time u reach ceiling you should be able to remove batten and half tiles!! repeat on remaining walls and then go to the pub and get bladdered :wink_smile:
 
i actually dun a job like this 2 weeks ago!! was a bugger to set out!!! i done my usual baton along the bottom then a little batton for evry other tile!!!!! was a nite mare! that was only after Phone,ing darren at north east tiling for advice!! but was worth it as was for a kitchen n bathroom studio n they gave me the contract for all there tiling after it!! didnt get paid that much though!!!!! but will make sure a do next time ha ha
 
never use mdf on a floor might be a big mistake on your part there ..........but fingers crossed for you
