A very specific Tender

Has anyone ever had a tender that specified the manufacturer of the trowel that should be used?

I have one specifying bal for everything and their trowels, I tried to copy the paragraph from the pdf file but its not working.


The wording is.........

A BAL THICK BED SOLID BED TROWEL WILL BE USED.

That might work Dave, dont really want to use bal nor do I want some suit coming around checking my trowels. Its the first tender I have had telling me what tools to use.

It's maybe more the solid bed trowel they're specifying?

The specification does not have the power to tie you one specific product or manufacturer if there are suitable and equivalent alternatives. The specification should say "BAL thick bed adhesive trowel or equivalent alternative". Otherwise in a dispute it could be considered anti competitive and that is a serious issue in business. They often don't say alternatives but they can't prevent you from using something else as long as it does the same job. If you want to use a different addy manufacturer or a different trowel simply break the spec with the main contractor.

To specify the type of trowel seems a little retentive to me though.

I know the spec on my house plans specified certain items like Celotex insulation and tyvek roof felt but you can use equivalent. Whether this situation is the same i dont know

It would normally only be the manufacturer who would specify one material with no equivallent. We obvioulsy do this when we write specs for Gyvlon screed. Would be a bit silly to say or alternative in that instance.

me too..i got a tender sent through the post last year from a company specifying a bal trowel to be used. the bal trowels are made by benson trowels i think? solid bed trowels with wooden handles..

Tiles are from Ceramique Internationale in Leeds, cant see who they use for adhesive on their website, anyone use them? I will be on the phone on Monday to try and clarify the situation but the tender is a supply and fix for 300 metres plus so its a big difference money wise if I have to use bal.

The Job I'm starting Monday had been specified by the architect, to use 6mm ply over 22mm chipboard, heatmat, then tile. When I spoke to him about this, he told me he specifies this on all his jobs and said he's never had a problem.

We're now going with....

22mm ply
10mm insulation
Heatmat and screed
Dural CI
760 x 440 porcelain tile.

I don't like architects, they seem to get all the money and the glory when a jobs finished. When it's the tradesmen that have got the job done and to the right spec!

Right has anyone got a contact for bal adhesives? I want a pallet of white flexy and 30 bags grey and 10 each grout. They wont budge on supplier.
