Issues with Grout - Patio

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

I had a new porcelain patio installed several months ago, and we have been struggling ever since the tiles were first laid down, with a recurring discolouration issue regarding the grout that's been used. The grout is Fugabella.

In short, the grout looks patchy, dark and wet even when the rest of the patio is clear removed link This has not changed even across a series of baking hot days. Some f patio grout is fine so it isn't an issue across the entire space.

Our contractor is of the opinion that this is product issue. When this issue first arose we did actually have someone from the distributor (manufacturer) come over, who stated that it was an installation/mixing issue by our contractor. The affected grout was carefully cut out, the new installation guidelines were adopted, and replacement grout was installed. Within less than a week the same areas of discolouration returned. The contractor is now adamant that this has never happened to them in over 100 jobs and it must be a product issue.

We are just seeking some independent advice/thoughts about what could be causing this, and if anyone has ever seen anything similar before.

To add the tiles were installed over a concrete base, the old patio base was broken down and new concrete was poured over the top. The porcelain tiles were installed on a wet bed mix and primed on the underside as directed.

I'm after what could be causing this staining and what can be done about it?

Is it a case of using a different grout? Or is there an issue with the installation of the grout/tiles/base?

Thanks in advance.

Looking at the pictures the grout looks very shallow?
First thing that springs to mind is there is water getting in somewhere as you say it took days to get like that, once the water is in and likely underneath the grout it will take ages to dry back out and of course anymore rain/moisture in the mornings would add to it.

You say the kerakoll rep gave the builder instruction but are you certain it was followed?

Can’t 100% tell from the pictures but it looks like hairline cracks in the grout too? Usually caused by movement.

Hope that helps.
