yesterday a 1998 Ford Escort turned up outside the house nextdoor (house is empty). The escort has no tax, looks like it's been used as a rubbish bin, owners manuals on the seat, steel wheels in the boot.

I'm going to ring the council tomorrow to report it, but, does anybody know whether it's possible to take over the ownership of the vehicle instead of the council scrapping it?

Seems a bit wasteful if the council are just going to scrap it, if the owners don't claim it. I wouldn't mind a free car right now. Fair enough it might be a pup, but it got here under it's own steam.

Is it worth a blag? Anybody tried this before?

you wont be able to do it if you ring the council as they will tow it and do a search for the registered owner

what you can do is get it on to your property and leave it about a month or so and if no one bangs on the door looking for it, send off for a logbook, costs £25

chances are its an mot failure and could be costly to get back on the road, im surprised its abandoned as you will get about £100 for a complete scrap car now and the price of scrap metal is rising again

it's got a lovely set of OZ alloys on it Mike so they might be worth a few quid too

I'll wait for darkness and see if it's locked.

I've been researching on the net, and it's possible to get the V5 transferred by the DVLA if they don't hear from the current keepers within an alloted timeframe. Only problem is that you don't get Legal Title to the vehicle by doing this, so you have to try and track down the previous owners to get them to agree to giving you title.

I suppose chances are the vehicle has been stolen (millenium burglary as all locks look fine) and they just abandoned it on the estate instead of a pub car park or something.

Ive done this with old motorbikes in the past and have had some nice bikes out of it

the council is to efficiant at clearing abandoned vehicles now, if its untaxed and on the public highway it will be crushed

it wont be stolen if the tax is out and you may find the keys under the front mat . if its locked look on top of the wheels or in the exhaust also have a search about as the keys get lobbed

if they dont have keys on their person they can deny they drove it there even if its registered to them
