Adhesive for slate floor tiles?

We'll be laying large (hopefully 900 x 600, but at least 600 x 400) gauged slate, onto a concrete base. What's the appropriate adhesive to use? I don't want to use rapidset, if possible.

BAL C2TE wall & floor will give you about 5 hour pot life. Use an SBR primer on your subfloor before application. Dilute about 3-1 to seal your floor.
900 x 600 is a big tile to be working with. An extra pair of hands will be needed to work with that size. 600 x 400 is a good bit more manageable.

Also what is a good depth of adhesive to aim for -- 5 mm? If 5mm, do I need thick-set adhesive on the basis that some areas will be +2mm?

Your best bet would be to throw down a self levelling compound to take out drops & imperfections in the floor. Will make your job much easier if your not that familiar to tiling.
As Whitebeam said, what trowel are you thinking of using?

Most of the concrete is dead level, just a few nicks up to 2mm or so, but there is an area where an old wall came out that needs levelling. Floor is dry, but concrete is probably 100 years old, so I doubt there is any kind of membrane -- that means latex-based leveller, doesn't it? Easiest one for me to get is Norcros Pro 50, but I don't think that's appropriate for this... Any recommendations on what's easiest to use and will do the job?
