Hi please can you help

Have had a new fitted kitchen and a new laid floor, the floor is a floating floor with 6mm ply (this is exactly what was down before) 60 x 60 porcelain tiles to be laid. On the advise of the tiler thicker ply should be used so he took advice from topps tiles and explained that toppfix 2 part flexible adhesive should be used this would be more expensive but suitable (guy in shop said this could be laid on floorboards so ply not a problem).

The tiles are lifting when removed the adhesive has stuck to the back of the tile but not to the plywood and this crumbles and is still soft it has been down 2 weeks. Sample has been sent to palace.

The entire kitchen will now need to be removed, floor lifted and started again who will be liable for this extra cost? the tiler is saying his liability insurance will not cover this.??

your tiler should have know better 6mm ply no good , and as for taking advice from any one at topps tiles , thats a joke imo

as for adhesive , mixing error or faulty as sir ramic as stated, i prosume you managed to save all the tiles

the floor needs to solid with out any deflection, , other wise you are wasting your time and money,

thanks am aware of issue re 6mm ply but that was why topps recommended toppfix - we had 6mm ply on porcelain previously down for 7 years and no problems. Any ideas who is going to pay for the cost of removing my kitchen, tiles and putting right the problem? tiler is saying his insurance does not cover this.

That all depends what Palace say when the adhesive has been tested.

if it is a materials issue then the tiler might have a claim against palace. My suggestion though given the nature of the installation that this is down to the tiler who appears to have fixed to an unsuitable substrate. His insurance would not cover it as it would be termed negligence. This might become long and protracted but ultimately the tiler is at fault IMO

I don't think the tiler is at fault as the adhesive recommended by Topps should be suitable for job. I have been told before that this adhesive can be used directly to floorboards, whey rock, chipboard etc, but i didn't use as i wasn't sure. Although surely if it is a recommended adhesive it should do the job ???

if Palace find out that the tiler has fixed on to 6mm ply then they will blame him ! if they don't and its a problem with the addy the tiler might get away with it, it's a close run thing IMO

I dont think palace could blame the tiler for the adhesive not setting unless he mixed it incorrectly.

Something sounds odd here. Lets get a few things right first:
The tiler says the floor should have been thicker, really NO floating floor should be tiled, but he was making the right noises about being unhappy, was he told by you that you wouldn't want thicker boards?
Did you as the customer say 'we've had this before it'll be fine?' So he had to find as best an adhesive to try and do the floor as best he could, so that he got the job.
Palace adhesive is not a big player in the adhesive market so you've not used the best manufacturer.
I for one would not have touched the floor, as would many others here.
Unfortunately it sounds like your man wanted the job, wasn't very happy about the job you wanted to do, took a risk, and now he's getting bitten by this job.
Ultimately he is to blame as he took the job on, but it does sound like he had his doubts from the start.

Firstly - I am not a tiler so not aware a floating floor can not be tiled on, it had always been tiled on previously with no problems and no one has told us that we could not have tiles. Due to it having 6mm ply is why we asked what was the best way forward no one mentioned cost to us only that it was recommended to go with the adhesive which we were told was more expensive - which we agreed. The fact the adhesive is not sticking to the ply is the main issue surely it wouldnt matter what mm ply was down? The tiles can be pulled up with a suction handle and the adhesive is stuck to the back of the tile NOT the ply and you can break off the adhesive this is after 2 weeks!
