just looked at a bathroom job , they want me to tile over existing ceramic wall tiles which have been painted . reason is there moving and just want it spruced up for selling . any advice ?

Best advice is (don't say this to a customer) but "get Em off !! "
if you tile over and the paint reacts to the adhesive the tiles are on the floor!
you could try to remove a lot of the paint maybe and roughen up the tiles under with a sander or something the prime and tile with a flexible addy.

Hi robjoe..

Whether the customer is moving or not it still needs doing right.......the next customer then will inherit the risk of them falling off .....

They need to come off / prep and re-tile............cutting corners just because the customer say's it is right is not a good way of doing things........

good luck....

Sounds like a cheap copout from the customer,i would do it properly or just would,nt do it at all,but thats the way i am,job sounds like a bit of a pain anyway,i wouldnt want to be scraping paint off tiles.

As the other guy's have stated and who will the customer be calling if somethink go'es wrong, "You"

I think I would try to talk some sense into the sellers. Explain what the problems are with the painted surface and tiling over tiles and that in any case any professional tiler worth his salt wouldn't recommend doing it.

Suggest that they leave your card and details for the new owners and then offer your services to them to inspect their next house in case someone has tried the same trick on them.

Agreed with the others, but frogeyes answer I like best. Take my "Thanks" for that good idea. Martin

Had this situation quite a lot of times now, customers moving house, wants the cheapest of jobs doing, tile over tile, and I've always said no, tiles need removing, customer don't want to remove them, won't pay for me to remove them, lose the job time and time again.
