I'm retiling a second floor circa 1970 bath, plywood sub floor. I bought hardie 1/2"waterproof backer board. The old tile was set in cememt, about 1.25" total thickness, so my aim was to get close to that so the toilet wouldn't be a problem.
Here's my issue. I have porcelain 8x48" planks bordering a mosaic tile. The thickness difference is about 1/8". There will be more thinset on the planks, so the difference could become 1/4". What's the best way to get the 2 tiles level?
The options I could think of, but could be all wrong.

- put 1/4" backerboard on top of the 1/2" where the mosaic is to be set.
- use one of those membranes that are 1/8" thick on the cement backerboard
- less thinset on the planks, but that seems to be a bad idea.
