My first real post and it's not even for me...

A friend is wanting to have her bathroom tiled (the walls) and would like two bands of mosaic. Unfortunately, the tiles she likes are thinner than the mosaic, so what is the best way to avoid an unsightly and possibly dangerous step (the edges of the mosaic may be sharp)? More adhesive behind all of the thin tiles to pack them out a bit (which would be most of the wall), or should she just choose something different? Is there a standard method for coping with this sort of problem?

Many thanks.

Hi Ken, thanks for the rapid response. The walls are plastered brick, and are original from about 1908. I am slightly concerned that part of this wall will be inside a shower and that there should be some sort of waterproofing applied, or a backing board. Or does this not matter too much on brick?
I'm not involved with doing this job - too much of my own work to do! - but am just getting a few ideas for a friend, so she has a better idea of what her eventual tiler should be quoting for and doing.

The walls inside the shower should be tanked, no need for a backing board. Kits are about 50 pounds. Most tile suppliers stock them. Tiler will have to get paid for doing it, of course!

It would be possible to remove some or all of the plaster where the mosaic is going, as long as it is sealed before fitting.

Remember that there are weight limits for tiles on plaster, there's a sticky thread on here somewhere.
