Advice please - Newbuild subfloor for tiling

Hi there

1st post (of many no doubt), so here goes....

Currently in the process of building a self build house. 2 of the bathrooms are having Travertine type floor/wall tiles. The 22mm chipboard flooring is being installed throughout the 1st floor in the next few days.

I have been advised by Ardex to use the 22mm chipboard flooring throughout and then use Ditra matting on this before tiling in the 2 bathrooms.

I just want to make sure this is definately OK before the floors go down and that I don't require marine grade Ply installing instead of the 22mm chipboard (which is what I originally thought).

The floor is made up of posi-joist beams at 600mm centres.

Marine ply is defiantly better.

Just think of this - It will be hard to change in a year from now when you have a problem

Welcome.

At 600 centres you need 22mm ply not chipboard m8 unless you are nogging to take screws at 300mm in both directions ...........overlay the ply with Durabase Ci matting then tile over using flexible adhesive throughout.

Will these rooms be used for showers or just baths ??

Ditra matting is definately the way to go,it acts as a floating floor allowing the sub floor to move,expand or contract,I have been using it for years with no problems.Master-Tiler.co.uk

The bathrooms will be used as 'normal' bathrooms, NOT wetrooms. One has a shoer the other has a bath.

p.s. I'm not ignoring what the previous guys have said, just checking with bobbytiler if he thinks I'll need marine ply or not.

Ditra matting does away wih having to use any materials on the sub floor ie ply,self leveler,covers cracks,different surfaces such as tiling over one floor consisting of both wood,screed,concrete,allows sub floor to move o its own without effecting your tiling works.www.master-tiler.co.uk,bobbytiler

Hello bobby......

Ditra is only suitable for preventing lateral movement bieng transfered to the tile installation , it will not prevent deflection from transfering to the tiles...

If a timber floor has deflection then this needs to be strengthened before the use of Ditra...
