Advice please

I have just stripped some tiles off a wall round a bath, but the tubbed adhesive that was used is a pig to get off, I have managed to get most of the notches off but would really need to be mutli finished to give a smooth substrate, however it won't go of in time to tile, so can I skim with some rapid set, and tile the following morning. Should I pva or spa prior to skimming with rapid set? Cheers Ian

By a 4 inch scraper, and use it with some elbow grease - the adhesive will come off. Worst case - get as much off as possible, then use bigger trowel (e.g. 8 or 10mm notches).

PVA? wait for the hate emails.... er no dont PVA, use a proprietory tiling Primer.

I've used my 4" scrapper, it won't budge! Who says tubbed addy is rubbish? So can't skim with rapid set then ? I might butter the wall then and use larger notched trowel as I go.

You could try a SDS multidrill with a good tile chisel bit to get off the extra adhesive - but you may start getting more wall off than you wanted as well ....

I would always overboard a bad wall - even if its just with some screwed and addied 6mm sheets of hardibaker. Its probably just going to be your judgement at the end of the day!

I thought about 6 mm hard backer, so just use rapid set and screw it, what distance between the screws would you recommend ?

I am sure someone will tell you the screws should be no more than 200mm apart, but there are so many variables, like the size of the screw and rawlplug. I usually use the grey 10mm super plugs with 5mm x 60mm screws (depends on how sound sub strata wall is). Then I reckon you can get away with 6 or 8 screws per sheet especially if fitting 6 or 8mm ceramics on top.

Thats a lot fewer holes to drill!!

I use a wallpaper steamer/stripper thingy, it gets old tubbed gear off quite easily just be careful not to blow the plaster underneath...

if its really stuck I give the thick stuff a quick steam, then score it with my scraper then steam again and happy days comes off nice and easy..

Plus,not all scrapers are the same.Had many a job where the labourer has said he has scraped all of the old tubbed addy off,so I go in with my scraper and hey presto ''what's all this crap falling off the walls then''

Just dampen the wall with a sponge a few times and then it will soften it up.. if a D2 was used then it might be harder to remove.

I always use hot soapy water on old wall adhesive, give the wall a good soaking by brushing it on - it may need a a few soaks, then go at it with a sharp scraper. This works with great results for me

Depends how long you intend to live, but I know what you are saying. Glad you got it sorted.

Did the paint come off ian, if not you would need to remove also, cant rely on paint taking the weight of the tiles,, sander with harsh sandpaper. You might aswell do it right when renewing.

Yea got the paint off, but it took a good soaking from a stripper!

I hear you and take on board what you guys advise, but having stripped the tiles off, finding they used tabbed addy, and tiled over paint, 2 coats, different colours, amazed me how well they were stuck on

they probably had pva holding them on :lol::lol:

ardex do a product you can use as a skim over,not sure what its called but im sure its rapid setting,think its only a skim over though

i know youve sorted it but there is a product there if your ever in that situation again, without the paint behind it though

and has for tiles sticking to paint , thats good news ive loads of paint , no need to buy any more primer for a while, lol
