Architrave using travertine dado

I have bought some travertine dado rails / chair rails / mouldings or whatever you want to call them. They are standard length 30 cm. I want to use these for architrave round the door. Now I will mitre the corners but am not sure whether I should leave grout spaces between each piece or whether to butt them up without.

Now I know there's no wrong or right answer because you can do either. I am just after some advice from anyone who has done this or has an opinion on which is likely to look the best.

You need to allow a small grout gap to prevent bacteria growth..

And if they're next to wood (door frame) use flex addy and grout to alllow for any movement if the wood swells or shrinks

Small joint and use a skrim tape over the join between wall/frame and use a flexible adhesive.
Should look good and a nice finishing touch.
Take a photo.

I would have a couple of mm on mitres. Grout between trav and door lining. once dry use a mapei coloured silicone (jasmine) small bead over the grout. I think over time the grout only method will crack. Especially the way my missis slams the door

Thanks all. I think I'll leave grout gaps between each tile and mitre.

I was going to only fix using adhesive to the wall (Hardibacker board) and where it overlaps onto the door frame (wooden lining) I was going to fix using silicon.

Is this method correct? (or prefered should I say )

some silicones stain limestone/travertine you would be better to get a polyeurathane adhesive which is both more flexible and gives a greater bond strength than normal silicone

I am a bit confused about the fact that you say some silicon stains travertine. I was planning on doing all my internal corners with a silicon bead down the vertical and also a silicon bead round the top off the bath. Are you saying that I shouldn't use silicon for this application either? And if so, what else would I use?

Ive done 100s of silicone joints on travertine never stained before. I use dow corning and mapei silicone, jasmine colour sets it off nice. do a test bead on the stone if you are worried.

I would only silicone over grout between door lining and arch where there is movement. The adhesive will hold the tile on the wall,no need to silicone the tile to the door frame

Some stones are sensitive to acidic sealants, these mostly being the lighter stones like the white limestones etc.. for these it is better to use a neutral curing sealant like Mapesil LM ..

I find Mapesil AC sealant is fine for travertines.. this one is solvent free..
